1. Introduction

Welcome to KOCO - Knit One (garment) Change One (life). This document describes what we do and how we deliver meticulously made, handknitted products to our customers.

KOCO is reshaping the fashion industry with human-powered, transparent production practices which empower and train artisans in rural southern India.

The production team at KOCO has developed systems and processes to produce both small and large volume orders – without a machine in sight. The only technology used are computers for record keeping and finance.

We take care of all elements of production to make wholesome, transparent, quality precisely handknitted products part of your brand.

Handmade products have a unique look and feel which machines cannot match or replicate. At KOCO each item is made, from the first stitch to the last, by one person. Each artisan takes ownership of the outcomes for each garment as a whole, not just a sleeve or a band as it runs on a conveyor belt-style of production.

Every product comes with an engaging story, which we hope will capture the hearts of you and your buyers, and open minds to our human-powered, personal, sustainable business process changing lives in rural southern India.

KOCO's artisan knitters work in intellectually stimulating, emotionally supportive hubs, where they receive ongoing education and training, and the skills to negotiate their working conditions to suit family and village life.

This document has two principal objectives:

  1. to outline our process

  2. to inform you of our full range of services and indicative prices (AUD)

It outlines how we will work with you to ensure we deliver meticulously made garments on time.

2. The journey begins - Designing your items

KOCO can produce a range of garments or products for fashion and homeware brands.

We can also create a concept for your brand - an aesthetic vision for the product(s) to be hand-knitted.

We can design a full range or individual items to enhance your collection.

We live and breathe handknitting and design.

We start by understanding:

  1. Do you have the design, clearly drawn with exact measurements for all sizes?  No charge.

  2. Do you have the design drawn without measurements? (approx) $100 - $160.

  3. Do you have a design idea or direction, no drawing or size measurements? KOCO will create a design based on your idea or direction. (approx) $300 - $495 (price range represents baby to adult sizes, large or small items). Please allow an extra five working days (approx) .

If you need us to come up with a concept for your range this will take about 10 days (approx)  $200 - $600 Price range depends on the complexity, size and design of garments. We'll design something to reflect your brand. This involves:

  • Research: We discuss your aspirational vision for your brand to compile a brief of works, and conduct research based on your ideas.

  • Visual Presentation: We create a mood board and colour story for your brand’s vision for your approval.

  • Design: We create an agreed number of designs for your brand based on our research and mood board.

3.  Everything about patterns

A well-written pattern is the backbone of a hand-knitted garment. We can knit your pattern or write one for you.

Patterns written by KOCO belong to our company. Our patterns are highly detailed, written in a format our artisans understand. These are not for commercial use outside KOCO.

Patterns supplied by clients

We transcribe the pattern into a format our artisans can read. All patterns are rewritten so that each size has a separate file. This way, no inadvertent error is made from reading a pattern containing multiple sizes.

Our handknitting artisans will test-knit one sample garment before full production begins. Test-knitting supplied patterns highlights any errors. In KOCO's experience, almost every pattern contains an error and test knitting a sample prevents any delay in production. If we find a mistake, we will contact you. Correcting simple numerical errors cost $50 per error. If there are a significant number of errors it will cost between $100 - $350 to correct and rewrite the pattern, for example, $100 to rewrite a sleeve section of the pattern and up to $350 for a whole-pattern rewrite. This will be automatically added to your final invoice.

To ensure a more streamlined process, please email your pattern to KOCO at least seven working days before the yarn arrives at our knitting hub. If you are providing the pattern, please ensure it contains the following items:

  • Needle size and kind

  • Stitch details

  • Joining instructions

  • Label sewing instructions (if needed)

  • If you require blocking or not

Patterns written by KOCO

We can write patterns for your designs to be produced at our hubs. Our patterns are written out in full row-by-row – no abbreviations – which means no chance of misinterpretation of language or symbols.

If you would like KOCO to write your pattern, we charge between (approx) $100 - $495 (price range represents baby to adult sizes for both sweaters and beanies). We will talk with you about the time needed to write your pattern at the time of engagement.

Commercial patterns

We can discuss writing patterns for commercial purposes so that you can sell or engage others in knitting the pattern.

4.  Yarn sourcing

KOCO lives and breathes the yarns used in the handknitting world. We have built stable relationships with the world’s premium yarn manufacturers in many countries, such as Australia, India, China, South America, Italy and South Africa to source the most beautiful wool, cotton, alpaca wool, cashmere, possum and many other fibres and combinations of them.

Where the yarn originates and where it is spun and dyed are frequently two different places.

If you choose to supply the yarn, there is no charge.  We can help manage the shipping process to get it to us (see section 9 about Freight and Logistics).

If we source and supply the yarn for you ($100-$200 per yarn type, depending on complexity) and we handle all the delivery logistics from the various manufacturers.

We can also arrange for custom colours ($200 per colour) to be created for your range, giving your creation a genuinely unique edge.

We will be in touch via email when the yarn arrives at the hub.

Please note that we do not source buttons.  If you wish to have buttons incorporated into your design, please send them to us.  This applies to swing tags and other accessories.

5.  The swatches

A swatch is a 20cm square piece of handknitted fabric to demonstrate one or more aspects of the final garment.  There are 3 main types of swatches.

(i) Tension

KOCO knits tension swatches before writing the pattern. Testing tension is crucial to the quality and overall outcome of the final product. It is at this stage we decide the drape of the hand-knitted fabric. Artisans knit more than one (frequently up to four) swatches to get the look to match the creative concept of the design. This process is carried out with different thicknesses of yarns and also with varying sizes of needle and combinations.

(ii) Stitch

Stitch swatches allow our artisans to select the right stitch, from the many available, for your garment. For example, there are hundreds of different cable stitch patterns. Knitting a swatch of different stitches means the correct style can be discovered and tested.

(iii) Colour

Colour swatches are a great reference tool for your customers to see, before they order, a large sample of how a ball of wool in a particular colour looks when knitted. Colour swatches can also help you understand, first-hand, how the colour or colours work in your design.

KOCO can produce and send the swatches to you.

After discussions with you and based on your requirement, we will advise on weather you need a swatch or not.

We charge between $60- $150 (includes shipping) for stitch, colour and tension swatches. The price is determined by the type of yarn and level of direction given for the swatches. For example, KOCO can knit your stitch sample or create a stitch style for you. We will talk through your requirements at the time of engagement.

After the yarn arrives at the handknitting hubs, the first step is for KOCO artisans to begin knitting swatches.

6.  Samples

We can knit sample garments for you.

If you are a yarn manufacturer or distributor: We can knit sample garments for your customers to display in their store.

If you choose to supply us with a pattern and a sample garment, our artisans will follow the pattern (and not the sample garment).  The sample garment will be used as a reference only.

If the pattern and the sample are different, that is, the tension swatch of the sample does not match the tension swatch in the pattern, we will use the tension swatch written in the pattern, meaning the garments KOCO returns to you will be a different size from the sample you provided.

If you are a fashion brand: We can knit sample garments as a working prototype for a new design. A KOCO artisan will knit two identical samples. One will be shipped to you and the other stays at the hub as a reference tool during production or as an example we can alter if needed.

Hand-knitting two samples means you can receive a garment quickly to ensure the look, feel, drape and any other element matches your requirements. Keeping one sample at the KOCO hub provides greater efficiency during production as the garment can be referred to at any point in production to maintain a consistently high standard.

If you are supplying the yarn for the samples, please make sure that 2 extra balls of yarn (over and above the yarn required for the actual garment) are included for tension swatches.

If neither a garment or images can be provided, please note that it is highly likely 2 samples will be required.  The price of the second sample will be the same cost as the first sample, as this is not production, and is still within the design phase.

The first sample is created at a cost of double the approx. production price.

Production prices start when we enter production.

If you choose to supply KOCO with a pattern and a sample garment, our artisans will follow the pattern, and the sample will be a reference.

Your samples can be sent via post or images send via email.

7.  Communication

As our client, we will stay in touch with you and keep you updated throughout the process.

If you choose to engage us, we will also set up a What’s App group which includes the production manager, the logistics manager and key staff.

8. Your branding, your way

KOCO is happy to hand-sew your labels into garments, homewares and fashion items. We are also able to pack your goods according to your specific instructions.

Our artisans will sew in your labels, with either black or white thread. If you would like coloured thread used with your labels, simply post it to us.

Please send labels, sewing instructions, coloured thread, and any packing instructions to KOCO before production begins.

There is no charge for hand-sewing in your labels, or for individual packing arrangements. It's part of our service.

9. Logistics and Freight

KOCO has been operating globally since 2012. We have good relationships with reliable freight companies in many countries. We can manage products shipped from KOCO, or products (like yarn) sent to our hubs. Our freight management fee starts at $200 and may vary depending on complexity of orders.

Around the world there are many import and export laws that vary in each country and on the yarn type (fibre content). We work with you to fill out Indian import paperwork and ensures a smooth customs clearance process. India is a rapidly developing country. Laws are changing monthly. KOCO keeps up-to-date with of all these changes.

Option 1:  Manage the freight yourself

  • you are responsible for tracking the order door to door

  • you are responsible for all paperwork

  • you are responsible for clearing customs

  • you are responsible for any delays which may impact on your delivery schedule

Should you experience difficulties with your shipping and require our intervention, a flat fee of $350 will automatically be added to your invoice.

Option 2:  We manage the freight.

We highly recommend this option

Step 1: KOCO will email you a packing list document, to be completed and emailed back to us.

Step 2: When we receive the completed packing list, we will email you three documents – the invoice, the packing list, and the shipping address information.

Step 3: Please print three copies of the invoice and three copies of the packing list and give them to the courier agent collecting your shipment.

Step 4: Print the shipment address information document and tape it on each of your boxes.

Step 5: Contact your local UPS company to collect the shipment using our UPS account number: 000095960R DC AJ Textures Pvt Ltd

Exchange rates: Exchange rates may vary. KOCO will charge any exchange rate variances and or bank fees. These will automatically go on your freight charge bill.

10.  Confidentially policy

We hold commercial and artistic confidence in high regard.

We protect your creative work.

We guarantee that no one will see your knitting pattern or design sketches.

We may use high quality images of your completed garment for marketing purposes.  Please advise by email if this is unacceptable.

11.  Government holidays

On approved Government holidays in India, our knitting hubs, freight and customs will not operate.
